Tominquired,‘‘Wouldyoubeinterestedinreadingthemanu- scriptand,ifwarranted,writingtheforeword?’’Aftervoicingcon- cerns about time constraints and weighing them against a busy schedule,Ianswered,‘‘Yes.’’ MydecisiontodosowasreinforcedbymyinterestinLewisand Clark,whichpredatedmyinfatuationwiththeCivilWar.Thislater romancebeganinthewinterof1936–37,whenmyfather,aMarine CorpsveteranoftheGreatWarandaMontanarancher,readtome JohnThomason’sJebStuart.
