This document summarizes and examines Stjepan G. Mestrovic and Ryan Ashley Caldwell's analysis applying Emile Durkheim's concept of anomie to the abuses that occurred at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The authors argue that Durkheim's understanding of anomie as "derangement" is more accurate than it being understood as "normlessness".
