This document outlines the syllabus for a mass communication research methods course taking place in the fall semester of 2017. The course will be taught by Dr. Lucinda Austin and will focus on teaching students quantitative and qualitative research methods, including experiment design, surveys, content analysis, interviews and ethnography. Students will apply these methods by designing and conducting their own original research study or proposal on a topic of their choosing. Assignments include completing IRB ethics training, participating in peer groups, and developing a full research proposal or completed study, which students will present at the end of the semester. The goal of the course is for students to understand the role of research in mass communication and to learn how to apply various research methods.
