This document analyzes the professional education and career paths of elite judo coaches across 14 countries. It identifies 7 categories to describe coaches' backgrounds: athlete life, career transition, qualification, professional education, career, job assignments, and training process. The study finds coaches can be grouped into 4 models based on how their coaching activity relates to academic/scientific knowledge and institutional support from sports organizations: 1) institutionalized with organizational support and academic knowledge; 2) based on academic knowledge from universities; 3) partially institutionalized with some organizational support; and 4) based primarily on practical experience as athletes. The document concludes there is a relationship between national sports systems and coaches' development, and countries should establish policies to support elite judo coaches
