This document discusses using numerical relativity simulations on high performance computing systems to study astrophysical phenomena that cannot currently be observed experimentally, such as binary black hole mergers and gamma ray bursts. It provides an overview of recent results in relativistic astrophysics and describes the software infrastructure and physics codes used to carry out simulations of binary black holes and stellar core collapse on Teragrid and future petascale supercomputers. The authors plan to use increasingly powerful supercomputers to simulate more complex astrophysical systems and phenomena that could help observe gravitational waves and better understand gamma ray bursts.
