Short Facility Update Aquarium of the Pacific Chris Carr – Life Support Manager Aquarium Today • 501(c)(3) non-profit • Opened in June, 1998 • Five acres in Long Beach, CA • Represents three regions of the Pacific (Northern, Southern California / Baja, and Tropical) • 4th highest-attended aquarium in USA • 1.5 million annual attendance • 19 Major Habitats and 32 Focus Tanks Day to Day LSS Operation • 1 Manager • 1 Lead Technician • 7 Full time LSS techs • 10 Hour shifts • 4 Sets of rounds every 24 hours Build new exhibits with no increase in water or energy consumption?? • Environmental analysis • Identified “base line” resource usage • Analyzed existing water, natural gas, and electricity energy consumption • Based on results of study, the Aquarium developed the following sustainability goals: • Goal 1 – Minimize use resources—Zero increase in energy and water consumption • Goal 2 – LEED Gold certified standard for new additions Otter System Expansion 2009 • Objective was to add fish to otter system while improving water quality and the overall look of the exhibit. • Project included removing the otter water recovery system and adding system components to the main otter system. • LSS design by MWH.
