The eggplant is an economically important crop cultivated mainly in Asia and the Mediterranean. In Central Europe, eggplant cultivation has become more popular recently. This review discusses the history and current state of eggplant cultivation in Central Europe. It was introduced to Europe in the 12th century and to Poland in the 15th century but was initially grown for ornamental and medicinal purposes. Recent research in Poland has developed cultivation techniques for growing eggplant in greenhouses, tunnels, and open fields. Field production is expected to gradually increase due to lower costs compared to greenhouse production. The review aims to report current knowledge on technologies affecting the biology, cultivation, and quality of eggplants grown in temperate regions.
