Vivian Ling is a Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Oberlin College in the United States. She holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College, an M.A. from Washington University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She is the editor of Readings from the People's Daily and Born of the Same Roots—Stories of Modern Chinese Women, has translated a number of modern and contemporary short stories, and has authored numerous articles on Chinese language, linguistics, and contemporary literature.The end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 ushered in an unprecedented era of liberalism in Communist China, which in turn has given rise to the most exciting literary works that have surfaced since the May Fourth era. Although the curtain seems to have come down abruptly at the end of 1986, the literary achievements of the 1978-86 period have left us with some of the richest and most poignant depictions of contemporary Chinese life.Represented among the twelve selections in this book are three closely-related genres: fiction, reportage, and oral transcript (in the style of Studs Terkel). The pieces were selected on the basis of literary merit, author's insightfulness, representation of contemporary societal issues, readability , and lasting literary value. The majority of writers represented in this volume are young writers who launched their careers after the Cultural Revolution.
